Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

The Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa is a point-based system visa for those who are not sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government. It allows them to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident. They need to have at least 60 points to be entitled to apply for an Expression of Interest.

Below is a visual summary of the application process:

Pre-Assessment:

The first step is to check if your occupation is on the skilled occupation list and whether you have 60 Points Tested Skilled Migration in hand. If yes, you are eligible to apply for visa 189.

** You need to be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation and also have competent English.

Skill Assessment:

If you are entitled to apply for visa 189, you then need to have your skill assessed as ‘suitable’ for your nominated occupation. This assessment is carried out by the relevant assessing authorities. You must provide them a full (permanent) skills assessment which must be used for Points Tested Skilled Migration.

Express of Interest:

In order to submit your Expression of Interest (“EOI”), you need to have at least 60 Points Tested Skilled Migration. You may be wondering how does one know how many points they have? Well, here is a complete breakdown on how these points are calculated.

Visa Application:

If you are ranked high enough and there are places available for your nominated occupation, you will be invited to apply for the visa 189. Upon receiving the invitation, you have 60 calendar days to gather the necessary documents and apply for the visa.

PR Granted:

Your PR is granted! Now, you need to ensure you spend at least 2 out of the required 5 years, residing in Australia in order to maintain your permanent residency in Australia.

How much does this visa cost?

Below is a list of the relevant government fees for the year 2017:

  • Base application fee: $3670
  • Additional applicant charges for each additional adult that is 18 years and over: $1835
  • Additional applicant charges for each additional adult that is 18 years or under: $920

To summarize, first determine your eligibility based on your occupation as well as your Points Tested Skilled Migration and work from there. It is not an easy process, but where there is a will, there is a way!
